How to choose the right car insurance in Belgium

July 10, 2026·5 min

Third-party, mini-omnium or full comprehensive? Our advice to pick the right cover without overpaying.

In Belgium, only third-party liability (RC/BA) is compulsory: it covers the damage you cause to others. But depending on the value and age of your vehicle, a mini-omnium or full comprehensive cover can quickly become essential.

For a new or financed car, full comprehensive cover (theft, fire, glass breakage, own damage) is strongly recommended. For a car more than 5 to 7 years old, mini-omnium is often enough and much cheaper.

The price depends on your profile: age, no-claims history, postcode, usage and engine power. For equal cover, the gap between insurers frequently exceeds €300/year. That is where comparison makes all the difference.
